After much talk over the past few years, it appears that English Premier League clubs will finally curtail gambling sponsorships on jerseys. Clubs are set to discuss the matter on Thursday during a shareholders’ meeting, where they will reportedly vote to no longer allow gambling sponsors to appear on the front of shirts. The expectation is that gambling sponsors will still be able to be showcased on the sleeves of jerseys.
would not apply to teams in lower tiers of English soccer
Most teams are said to support the front-of-shirt ban after a three-year transition period. This would allow teams to finish the current deals that they have in place. If such a ban comes into effect, it would not apply to teams in lower tiers of English soccer due to potential economic issues it might cause.
Of the 20 teams in the Premier League, eight currently have a gambling company as their front-of-shirt sponsor. These deals are reportedly worth £5m-£10m ($6m-$12m) per season.
According to reports, Premier League teams hope to avoid more stringent measures by the UK government by enacting a front-of-shirt ban themselves. The government is set to finally publish its white paper on gambling legislation in the near future. Clubs hope to avoid the rumored total ban on all forms of gambling sponsorship.
