The Muck: Are You Morally Obligated to Issue a Refund if a Player Misreads Hand?

What’s morally right and wrong in poker is often subjective, but one hand last week on Hustler Casino Live has many within the poker community debating if the player who won the pot is morally obligated to refund his opponent who misread his hand.

In this edition of The Muck, we share social media’s take on the issue and break down the controversial hand. This purpose of this article isn’t to call anyone out, but instead to get a pulse on how the community as a whole would have handled the situation.

What is that situation we’re referring to? During a Hustler stream on Aug. 24, with the board showing 10595J, a poker pro who goes by the name “San Man” on the show called a $14,300 all-in bet with 64 — six-high. His opponent, “Dr. H,” is a recreational player who turned over QQ to scoop the $43,670 pot.

Immediately after the clip spread across social media, many within the poker community argued that Dr. H should pay back the river bet due to his opponent simply misreading his hand. Clearly, San Man wasn’t trying to make a hero call with six-high, which would’ve been playing the board. It was undoubtedly a misstep as he likely thought he had trips with a 6x5x type hand.

What’s the Issue?

There is no rule in poker requiring a player to pay back an opponent for misreading a hand. And even if one existed, it would be an easy rule to abuse. There’d be players who claim they misread a hand every time they make a hero call attempt and run into a made hand.

So, what’s the big deal? Well, the real issue in a hand such as the one mentioned above is that it was clearly a misread by San Man. The poker room — Hustler Casino in Los Angeles — cannot force Dr. H to refund the river bet. But many poker players have argued that a refund should be made in cut-and-dry instances such as this one.

Jeff Boski polled his X followers asking what if they would have paid the river bet back. Over 60% voted in favor of keeping all of the money, while less than 10% would give a full refund.

Mike Matusow referred to those who voted in favor of keeping the money as “an embarrassment to poker.” He then questioned the morals of anyone who wouldn’t give the full $14,300 back to San Man.

That was a common argument made by many within the poker community, especially among the high-stakes professional player demographic. But others claim that part of a poker player’s job is to remember the hand they are holding and to be held accountable for mistakes.

“NO BET IN POKER DOOR SHOULD EVER BE RETURNED, unless someone cheats, it’s the person’s responsibility to know his hand , even tho he lost it’s part of the game, you don’t return money I’m when playing a competitive game like poker,” @iim_riskyy wrote.

“Would they do it for me? If no, then no way. If yes, return the river bet,” @d3wayne commented.

“if it was J4, there woulda been an investigation,” @brokemogul joked, referring to the infamous Garrett Adelstein vs. Robbi Jade Lew alleged cheating incident on Hustler Casino Live last year.

In a recent heads-up match against Kevin Rabichow at The Lodge Card Club near Austin, Texas, the room’s co-owner Doug Polk refunded his opponent in a similar situation as he felt it was the right thing to do.

“Should absolutely be giving the bet back when caller can’t even beat a bluff. Kinda gross the other guy didn’t even have a discussion to negotiate ANYTHING,” @Tylerz_55 argued.

So, is a poker player morally obligated to refund a player who makes a call on the river with a hand that can’t even beat a bluff? Instead of answering that question, we ask for you to share your own views in the poll below.

Chris Ralston Crowned 2023 APAT WCOAP Main Event Champion

Scotsman Chris Ralston can forever call himself the 2023 Amateur Poker Association & Tour (APAT) World Champion after he took down the £180 World Championship Of Amateur Poker (WCOAP) Main Event at Dusk Till Dawn. Ralston heads back north of the border with a coveted WCOAP bracelet plus a bankroll-boosting £15,000.

A bumper crowd of 696 entrants created a £104,400 prize pool that the top 103 finishers shared. A min-cash weighed in at £300, with a top 18 finish resulting in a four-figure sum. Anyone reaching the final table secured at least £2,000 for their efforts.

2023 WCOAP Main Event Final Table Results

Rank Player Prize
1 Chris Ralston £15,000
2 James Martin £10,000
3 Elliot Crowder £7,000
4 Matthew Newman £5,000
5 David Amos £4,100
6 Steven Frew £3,500
7 Anonymous £3,000
8 Neil Wyatt £2,500
9 Garry Spinks £2,000

Garry Spinks was the second-shortest stack at the start of the final table’s action, but he was the first out of door. Start-of-the-day short-stack Neil Wyatt joined Spinks at the Dusk Till Dawn cashier desk before an anonymous player fell by the wayside, leaving only six players in the hunt for the title of champion.

Steven Frew bowed out in sixth for £3,500, with long-time APATer David Amos finding himself void of chips, and finishing in fifth for £4,100. Amos is a hugely popular APAT member, one who tirelessly raises money and awareness for the Raise for Jack charity, a charitable organisation that supports young lives affected by cancer.

Matthew Newman fell in fourth for £5,000, bursting the all-important medal bubble. Elliot Crowder finished in third for a bronze medal plus £7,000, and James Martin in second for £10,000 and a silver medal, after a incredible final hand.

Ralston opened on the button, a short-stacked Crowder moved all-in from the small blind, only for Martin to move all-in. Ralston snap-called, covering both opponents by some margin, and turned over pocket kings. Crowder showed four-trey suits, while Martin could only muster pocket eights. Ralston improved to a full house on the turn, and became the 2023 WCOAP Main Event champion, an accolade that came with £15,000 in prize money plus a WCOAP bracelet.

Dan Williams
Dan Williams

Twenty-two other WCOAP events crowned their champions over the course of the festival, including a gold medal for PokerNews‘ own Daniel Williams.

Williams bought into the Pot-Limit Omaha 4/5/6 Card event, and bulldozed his way through a talented final table line-up to scoop £2,450 and the aforementioned gold medal. You have likely interacted with Williams if you are member of the PokerNews Discord channel – if you’re not, why not? – or are a regular at APAT events or on the APAT Facebook page.

Aside from the Main Event winner and runner-up, Javed Akhtar was the biggest winner of the WCOAP, courtesy of securing a £9,360 payout by triumphing in the £340 buy-in High Roller championship.

In the more unique tournaments, Team England came out on top in the International Teams event, leaving Team Wales and Team Germany to collect second and third place, respectively. PokerNews stated Team England looked strong, and they lived up to the hype, making up for a runner-up finish at the 2022 WCOAP.

There was also an impressive victory for Valerie Bennett and Mark Radford in the £60 NLHE Tag Team Championship. Bennett and Radford each banked £880 and some poker gold after defeating the tag team of Nicholas Crossfield and Gary Lipman heads-up.

Viva Las Vegas! The PokerStars NAPT Returns on November 4

Viva Las Vegas! The PokerStars NAPT Returns on November 4

The PokerStars North American Poker Tour (NAPT) is returning after a 12-year hiatus, and where better to get the show on the road than fabulous Las Vegas? November 4-12 are the dates to highlight in your diaries because that is when NAPT Las Vegas heads to Resorts World in “Sin City.”

The 2023 NAPT Las Vegas takes place just one week before the most anticipated Formula 1 Grand Prix in history, which takes place through the streets of Las Vegas. PokerStars will be there, Oracle Red Bull Racing will be there, will you?

Although primarily aimed at the North American market, the NAPT is open to all, and PokerNews expects players to travel from far and wide to get involved in this historic rebirth. A $1,650 buy-in NAPT Las Vegas Main Event runs from November 6-11, and a $550 PokerStars Cup is scheduled for November 9-12, with a $5,300 High Roller attracting the biggest names between November 10-12. The full 2023 NAPT Las Vegas schedule will be released in due course.

Steve Preiss, Vice President for PokerStars North America, cannot wait for the first NAPT in 12 years to shuffle up and deal at Resorts World.

“We are delighted to announce the return of this iconic series and once again hold the NAPT for poker players in North America. We’re working hard to ensure this is a spectacular series and can’t wait to head to Las Vegas to get the show on the road.”

Learn more about the PokerStars Power Path

Discover what makes the PokerStars Power Path so awesome.

Leon Wheeler, Director of Poker Operations at Resorts World Las Vegas, is delighted to join forces with PokerStars and the NAPT.

“We are thrilled to partner with PokerStars as we celebrate the return of the North American Poker Tour with the first stop at Resorts World Las Vegas. NAPT Las Vegas is sure to bring players in from all over the globe, and we look forward to hosting them once again at our world-class property.”

Expect online satellites and various qualification routes galore for PokerStars customers in Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ontario, and on PokerStars’ worldwide platform. Las Vegas is the Mecca for poker players, so NAPT Las Vegas, coupled with the Grand Prix Las Vegas, is sure to be a massive hit with everyone.

The NAPT: A Short But Spectacular Affair

PokerStars NAPT

The inaugural PokerStars NAPT event was the $10,300 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event in January 2010, where Harrison Gimbel came out on top of a 1,529-strong crowd to bank a cool $2,200,000.

Only eight more events took place before Black Friday struck and ultimately ended the original NAPT. Indeed, the $5,000 buy-in Main Event at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut in April 2011, won by former Team PokerStars member Vanessa Selbst for $450,000, concluded two days before Black Friday, which saw leading online poker sites withdraw from the United States, rendering the NAPT unnecessary.

The online poker landscape in the United States is much different these days, with PokerStars operating in several states. American players can currently play real money poker online at PokerStars in Michigan, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, so expect these sites to be busting with satellites and other ways to qualify for the NAPT Las Vegas festival.

The Circuit stop in Oklahoma culminated with the $1,700 buy-in WSOPC Tulsa Main Event, which drew 397 entrants for a total prize pool of $601,455. The biggest share of that went to Kansas native Mark Barrientos, who won the event for his second Circuit ring and $126,900.

Pocket Queens Lose to Pocket Kings in $1.86 Million Pot at Triton Poker Cash Game

It’s always a sick feeling when you run queens into kings for your entire stack, but at least there’s always the chance that you could spike a two-outer to come out on top. However, that wasn’t quite the case for an American businessman at a recent Triton Poker cash game.

In one the largest televised pots of all time, Phil Nagy found himself in the above situation, but unfortunately for him, any hope of a suckout was gone as the last two queens remaining in the deck had already hit the muck.

Nagy could only watch on in disbelief as almost $800,000 left his stack in just one hand.

Suvarna Plays It Perfectly

With blinds at an astronomical $1,000/$2,000 and $4,000 ante, businessman Nagy opened the action from under the gun with QQ. He made it $6,000 to go and picked up calls from Triton regulars Paul Phua, Tony G and Mr. Long.

High-roller Santhosh Suvarna then looked down at KK in the small blind and reraised to $36,000. Rob Yong, in the big blind, put in the four-bet to $85,000 with the last two remaining queens in the deck. Nagy then clicked it to $250,000, which only Suvarna and Yong called.

Suvarna was in dreamland as the 754 flop had both of his opponents drawing dead but continued to slowplay his cowboys and checked. Yong also checked to the preflop aggressor, which saw Nagy fire out $300,000. Suvarna then sprung into life and moved all in for $545,000, pushing Yong out of the pot. Nagy wasn’t thrilled with the spot, but the price to call just proved too good.

Yong then declared that he had folded his black queens, which was not want Nagy wanted to hear. With his hands on his head and a defeated look on his face, the VIP had to watch the $1,862,000 pot be sent over to his opponent after deciding to run the turn and river twice.

The Year of Seven Figure Pots

Poker cash game fans have been treated to a plethora of nose-bleed stakes games this year, and the onlookers have been rewarded with some of the biggest cash game pots ever televised.

Back in February, Patrik Antonius won the largest ever pot broadcast on a US live stream.

He dragged in a pot worth $1,978,000 after being gifted a small fortune by Eric Persson.

Then just a few months later, Tom Dwan picked up off a ballsy bluff in a $3.1 million pot on Hustler Casino Live to break the newly-set record.

Coincidentally, Dwan broke his own record for the largest-ever televised pot. In 2018, he ran into the aforementioned Phua’s aces in a pot worth $2,353,500.

“PimPitup14” Triumphs in Thrilling Showdown in the 888poker $100K Mystery Bounty

Luxembourg’s “PimPitup14” is $7,834 richer than they were a couple of days ago thanks to taking down the latest edition of the 888poker $100,000 Mystery Bounty Main Event. A field of 928 entrants, made up of 772 unique players and 156 re-entries, fought tooth and nail for a slice of the $100,000 prize pool.

Day 1 ended with only nine players in the mix for the title of champion and the largest main prize pool prize. The three chunkiest mystery bounties, two worth $3,000 and one weighing in at $10,000, were all won before the curtain came down on Day 1 proceedings.

Fiftieth-place finisher “CurrD” claimed a $3,000 scalp before they bowed out, with the other two big bounties won by players who reached the final table. “1IIIIIIIIIIII1” clinched a $3,000 bounty, while “LuiMartins” reeled in the $10,000 jackpot, which ultimately meant they won the most prize money despite their tournament ending in a sixth-place finish.

$100,000 Mystery Bounty Main Event Final Table Chip Counts

Rank Player Country Chips Big Blinds
1 1IIIIIIIIIIII1 Thailand 3,889,256 97
2 ForSalary Mexico 2,201,505 55
3 PimPitup14 Luxembourg 2,024,626 51
4 LuiMartins Brazil 1,951,452 49
5 kaua. Brazil 1,328,915 33
6 championamin Canada 939,706 24
7 Suic1deKin9 Thailand 785,913 20
8 Inflaatio Finland 668,740 17
9 eyetoeye14 United Kingdom 129,887 3

The final table exploded into life during the very first hand. British grinder “eyetoeye14” sat down with a mere three big blinds, and they went into the middle of the table from early position with ace-eight. “LuiMartins” called the all-in from the next seat along with ace-jack, only for “Inflaatio” to squeeze to 13.5 big blinds with pocket tens in middle position.

The action did not stop there because “championamin” ripped in 22.2 bigs from the small blind with ace-six of clubs! “LuiMartins” ducked out of the way, but “Inflaatio” called off the three big blind they left behind. The pocket tens held, busting “eyetoeye14” and more than doubling the stack of “Inflaatio.”

Brazil’s “kaua.” busted in eighth place in cruel circumstances. “ForSalary” min-raised with king-jack in middle position, “PimPitup14” called on the button with king-queen of diamonds, only for “kaua.” To jam for 24.3 big blinds in the big blind with ace-king. “ForSalary” folded, but “PimPitup14” called. The community cards displayed three diamonds by the turn, gifting “PimPitup14” a hand-winning flush.

The final table became officially short-handed with the elimination of “ForSalary” in seventh on the 45-minute mark. Having lost most of their stack with ace-queen against the ace-king of “championamin,” “ForSalary” open-shoved for 13.5 big blinds with pocket fives in late position, but did not count on “PimPitup14” waking up in the small blind with pocket aces. The five community cards provided no drama, and “ForSalary” was done and dusted.

“LuiMartins” lost his short stack to “Inflaatio” and finished in sixth place. They moved all-in for 5.5 big blinds with ace-four, and “Inflaatio” called with queen-jack. “LuiMartins” turned two pair, but the river put four clubs on the board, and “Inflaatio” held the jack of clubs. Good game.

The final five became four when “1IIIIIIIIIIII1” found themselves on the sidelines, despite sitting down at the final table with by far the largest stack. Their final hand was a battle of the blinds. “Inflaatio” moved all-in from the small blind for 10.8 big blinds effective, and “1IIIIIIIIIIII1” instantly called with pocket kings. “Inflaatio” turned over ace-eight, which flopped an ace, and the barcode player bowed out.

An ill-timed move by “Suic1deKin9” saw them heading for the exits. “Inflaatio” min-raised with ace-jack and quickly called the 17 big blind all-in three-bet “Suic1deKin9” made with the dominated ace-seven in the big blind. Both players paired their kicker, which was not enough to prevent “Suic1deKin9” from crashing out.

Heads-up was reached when the aggressive “Inflaatio” went from chip leader to third-place finisher. Their final participation was to raise 10.3 big blind with ace-nine, leaving themselves a solitary big blind behind. “PimPitup14” called in the small blind with ace-king, and the last chips went into the middle on a king-high flop. “Inflaatio” had a backdoor flush draw, on the flop, and a gutshot straight on the turn, but they missed all of those outs.

“PimPitup14” went into heads-up against “championamin” holding a three-to-one chip lead. The one-on-one battle was short-lived, ending in a bizarre hand where “PimPitup14” min-raised with queen-nine, and “championamin” called with queen-eight. A nine-deuce-nine flop saw “championamin” jam 41.5 big blinds into the middle, and they were snapped off. “championamin” picked up a spade flush on the turn, but the river bricked, handing the title to “PimPitup14.”
