Court Allows Horse Slaughter to Continue

March 15, 2006 A district court has rejected DDALs request for a temporary restraining order that would have safeguarded the temporary ban on horse slaughter. DDAL, along with other animal protection organizations and individuals, recently filed suit in federal court in Washington, D.C. to block the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) from implementing a scheme to circumvent the ban.

Last year, overwhelming Congressional and public support led to the approval of the Horse Slaughter Amendment as part of the 2006 Agriculture Appropriations Bill. The amendment barred expenditure of federal funds to inspect horses going to slaughter from March 10 through September 30, 2006. Without the inspections, the slaughter plants cannot slaughter horses for human consumption.

Under the new USDA scheme, the slaughterhouses will now pay USDA to execute the inspections, thus circumventing the law and the will of the American public. As a result, tens of thousands of horses will die.

Urge Congress to Pass Permanent Ban Now!

The only permanent solution to end this cruel trade is passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 1915/H.R. 503). This bill prohibits the transport of horses for slaughter here or abroad.
