VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES There are many volunteer opportunities at E.P.O.N.A.; It is not necessary to have horse experience. As you can see below there are a great many needs for an organization like ours.
CITY YEAR Friday, May 20, 2005
30 volunteers from City Year came and spent the afternoon at E.P.O.N.A. on Friday, May 20. You can see the results of their efforts the minute you drive into the driveway. It was a great day! They got the shrubs at the entrance trimmed; the driveway and the aisle in the barn leveled out. They got the sheds almost all stained; the gate in Paddock two fixed; the post set for Chance's future in-and-out paddock and the post set for another electric paddock in the back field. It was a very inspiring day to see these total strangers work so very hard for a cause that they are barely familiar with.
At the end of the day they have a great ceremony during which the group gathers in a large circle and gives what their "thorn and rose" of the day was. There were few thorns, but the two most common was the fact that they were not able to finish the sheds and - among the women - the lack of a bathroom (they were forewarned and we did offer an hourly trip to Irving). The roses were plentiful and everyone expressed the interest to return. So we will see them again, perhaps in the fall.
Thanks as well to our regular volunteers that came to help support the effort as well: Jim and Hank for helping with the fence post and tractor, Marsha, Dawn, Julie and Nancy on the blankets. Also a special thanks to Leah for single handle bagging and transporting all of the blankets at both E.P.O.N.A. and Spinnaker in the pouring rain.
Maintenance is an endless task. There are many skills needed.
Cleaning up is always a chore; it takes a great many hands to keep up with the task.
Volunteering experiences like working with the Premarin foals can be very rewarding.
There are a great many hands behind the scenes as well.
