When Macau authorities arrested Alvin Chau in November 2021, it left chairman of the Tak Chun Group Levo Chan Weng-Lian as the China Special Administrative Region (SAR)’s most powerful junket boss until his arrest late last year.

Now, however, Chan will spend the next 14 years in prison, after the Court of First Instance sentenced him Friday. In January, the courts convicted Chau of over 100 charges and handed him an 18-year jail term.

Chan’s lesser jail term reflects his 34 convictions, which included money laundering, fraud, criminal association, and masterminding an unlawful multi-billion-dollar gambling ring.

involved in illegal activities totalling S$6bn (US$4.5bn)

According to the Hong Kong Standard, Chan, who is married to Taiwanese actress Ady An, was involved in illegal activities totaling S$6bn (US$4.5bn) of which Chan pocketed around S$267m (US$200m).

With China’s anti-corruption sweep showing no sign of letting up, the Macau government also recently published new regulations for the gambling industry. What may concern the likes of Wynn Macau and Sands China is that the renewed concessions are subject to increased government supervision.
